Our Mission in Action

Inquisitive Community/Info Exchange

Who – We work with teachers in New York City public schools.

What –  We support them to integrate technology and active learning to engage students more deeply in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

How – Face to face exchange happens in classrooms, in workshops at Fordham University and in outdoor settings such as in community gardens or in fieldtrips to the New York Botanical Gardens.

Inquisitive Community/Story and Info Exchange/Quality of Life

Who – We have also facilitated exchange and learning over the Internet. We worked with teachers in 16 countries, launching one of the first online global education programs in 2002, entitled the Peace Diaries.

What – The Peace Diaries was hailed by the press as as innovation for the integration of technology for learning.  We developed the curriculum that included activities on culture, health, sustainable development and quality of life.

How – We customized an elearning space where students could submit work and teachers could moderate it.  We produced three volumes of books from the works that were collected and displayed on the Internet.

Inquisitive Community/Story/Info Exchange

Who – We are also hosting an online community for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers entitled STEMgarden.

What – This is a place to share curriculum and post comments on techniques, programs and projects that work to promote deeper engagement in STEM by students.

How – The community is an outgrowth of the work implemented by Knowledge iTrust on a 3-year grant awarded by the New York State Education Department to schools in the Bronx, New York.  Many of the students in these schools are also blogging with Knowledge iTrust’s Dr. Karen Kaun on various science topics.
